RFID Toll Automation

Modern toll collection systems are increasingly adopting RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to enhance efficiency, speed, and accuracy. RFID-based electronic toll collection (ETC) systems streamline the process by allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, enabling contactless, automated toll payments. This advancement in electronic toll collection (ETC) relies on RFID windshield tags, RFID readers, and antennas to streamline operations, reduce traffic congestion, save fuel, and enhance overall efficiency.

ID Tech offers a comprehensive RFID solution tailored for tolling applications, parking automation, and industries like mining for vehicle access control. Our RFID UHF fixed integrated reader, IDT 87IN, is specifically designed for robust outdoor environments, featuring an IP68 rating that ensures protection against dust and water. This reader integrates the Impinj module, offering superior read range, accuracy, and the capability to read all three RFID memory banks simultaneously. With LED and buzzer indicators, users can visually confirm that tags are being read, and the system functions reliably even at high vehicle speeds.

At ID Tech, we partner with our customers to [re]imagine mobility by combining advanced RFID technology with cutting-edge tolling systems, automated vehicle identification and classification, data processing, and digital payment solutions—all delivered with exceptional service. Our mission is to help communities worldwide enhance mobility, increase sustainability, improve safety, and generate additional revenue.

How it Works

1. Windshield RFID Tags for Vehicles

RFID-enabled tags are securely placed on the vehicle's windshield. Each tag is uniquely linked to the vehicle info. such as VRN, vehicle weight, owner’s name, and a linked prepaid account, enabling automatic toll payment when scanned by RFID readers at toll plazas. This process eliminates the need for vehicles to stop at tolls, eliminates wait time, streamlining traffic flow and reducing congestion.

2. RFID Reader Deployment

RFID readers with customised antennas are deployed at toll plazas in multiple configurations such as sideways, overhead, or handheld setups to ensure accurate tag reading in different lane and vehicle conditions. These readers are designed for high reliability in heavy traffic and harsh outdoor environments, typically with a minimum IP65 protection rating for durability against dust and moisture.

3. RFID Reader Integration with Boom Barriers

RFID readers can be seamlessly integrated with boom barriers at toll plazas to automate barrier operation. When a vehicle equipped with an RFID tag approaches, the reader captures the tag information and triggers the boom barrier to open automatically. This integration enhances the flow of traffic, reducing wait times and eliminating the need for manual intervention.

4. Data Processing and Management

Once the RFID reader captures the tag data, it is transmitted to the toll operator’s system. The toll amount is automatically deducted from the account linked to the tag, and the transaction details are stored. This automated process improves the accuracy of toll collection and enables real-time monitoring of vehicle movement. The system also supports data analytics, helping operators optimize traffic management and improve operational efficiency.

5. MLFF (Multi-Lane Free Flow) Tolling Enablement

In advanced deployments, RFID tolling supports MLFF where multiple lanes operate without physical toll booths or lane-level stopping. Vehicles pass through tolling zones at normal speed while overhead gantries equipped with RFID readers capture tag details across multiple lanes simultaneously. This significantly reduces congestion, improves throughput, and enables seamless toll collection without any barrier-based interruption.

6. Real-Time Validation & Exception Handling

The system performs real-time validation of tag authenticity and account balance. In case of issues such as low balance, blacklisted tags, or unreadable tags, the system can trigger alerts for manual verification or enforcement mechanisms. This ensures secure toll operations, reduces fraud, and maintains a high level of accuracy even in high-speed MLFF environment.

Benefits of RFID In Toll

Time and Fuel Savings

RFID technology allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, reducing idle time and fuel consumption, leading to smoother traffic flow and lower environmental impact.

Flexible Deployment

RFID readers, capable of being installed in multiple configurations (sideways, overhead, or handheld), provide flexibility in adapting to different toll plaza setups, ensuring reliable tag reading under various conditions.

Accurate and Secure Transactions

RFID windshield tags enable automated toll collection with high accuracy, reducing manual errors and fraud, while the tamper-proof design of the tags ensures secure, non-transferable vehicle identification.
